BRITA filtration at a glanceWhy do tea, coffee and soft drinks taste better with filtered water? Water is a very good natural solvent and helps develop the aroma of coffee and tea. The amount of temporary hardness (lime scale) in the water affects the dissolution of aromatics, for example in tea and coffee. The higher the proportion of lime scale in the water, the lower is the ability to dissolve. With a low scale content in drinking water, the aroma of tea and coffee develops better, as does that of cooked foods.
What is filtered out? The carbon absorbs chlorine, pesticides and organic pollutants, improves taste, and eliminates odours and discoloration. It also contains an inhibitor that prevents bacterial growth. The ion exchange resin removes the temporary hardness, which causes limescale; it also significantly reduces levels of metals such as copper and lead.
How does the Maxtra cartridge work? Maxtra contains a combination of ion exchange resin and activated carbon. The filter process itself works in 4 steps:
Step 1: Intensive Pre-Filtration: The water flows through a fine mesh filter.
Step 2: Ion Exchange Filtration: The ion exchange resin reduces limescale (carbonate hardness) and certain heavy metals (like lead and copper).
Step 3: Activated Carbon Filtration: The activated carbon significantly reduces substances that affect smell and taste such as chlorine and organic impurities as well as certain pesticides.
Step 4: Intensive Final Filtration: The special fine mesh filter retains the particle mixture.

How often do I have to change the Maxtra cartridge ? Water quality varies considerably from place to place and even from day to day in the same place. This in turn has an effect on the life of a cartridge. To ensure that your Brita filter jug is always working well we recommend that the cartridge is changed regularly, at least every 4 weeks. BRITA Water Filter jugs are equipped with either an electronic "Memo" or the exchange indicator "Calendar" to indicate when the cartridge should be changed.
How long does it take to filter? The filter process with the 4 Step filtration takes approximately 1 Minute. |
