Complete solutions for recyclingBRITA has set itself the goal to establish environment friendly standards for the development and production of its products. We take these requirements into account through the judicious use of existing resources, the avoidance of waste and the strive for the complete recycling of all products. Learn more about recycling at BRITA:
Recycling of household products Since 1992, all parts of BRITA filter cartridges can be completely reprocessed and the materials can be recycled. The users of BRITA household water filters can return used filter cartridges in Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, France and Switzerland to the dealers or to the distributor who will then return them to BRITA for recycling. For example in Germany, one in four BRITA filter cartridge is now being returned for recycling.
The process in detail:
- The company's Recycling Department shreds the cartridges and the filtering material is separated from the plastic case.
- The plastic material is pre-cleaned and then grinned. The resulting plastic granulate is supplied to the plastics industry for renewed processing for various purposes.
- Activated carbon and ion exchangers - the contents of the filtering cartridge - are separated at BRITA by a separating and regenerating line.
- The activated carbon is returned to the manufacturer where it is reactivated in special installations or reused for waste water treatment.
- The ion exchange resin remains at BRITA where it is subjected to a 100 per cent regeneration process during which the ion exchange resin regains its full perfomance capacity in a series of treatment processing stages. Thermal after-treatment ensures once again the re-establishment of hygienic purity. At the end of this process, the ion exchange resin fulfils all the quality demands that are expected in functional and hygienic terms of new, freshly produced ion exchange resin. This is guaranteed by stringent external and internal examinations. The regenerated ion exchange is then reused for the production of household water filters.
Recycling of professional products BRITA professional water filters are regenerated and recycled by BRITA at its own facilities. This ensures attractive costs of BRITA replacement filters with a BRITA guarantee of full performance capacity, because each individual component is tested and replaced if necessary. Therefore, the customer always receives a virtually new water filter - at the attractive price of a replacement filter. Only the special BRITA regeneration process, including pasteurization, followed by an optimization with activated carbon, guarantees the consistently high quality of the BRITA medium. Other regeneration processes may alter the composition of the medium and, therefore, the result of water quality. Problems often observed in practice due to inexpert filter regeneration, such as insufficient filter effectiveness or overtly premature exhaustion of the filter material, for example, can be practically ruled out for BRITA replacement filters. This is documented by BRITA in an individual test certificate for each replacement filter. This BRITA test certificate stands for the exhaustive BRITA control with an examination of each appliance for tightness and an investigation of the effect on water quality. This documented operating performance offers the user the advantage of being able to tie BRITA professional water filter systems into operating quality control measures. BRITA strives for the complete recycling of all products. Yet, in some countries recycling does not make sense in ecological terms, since a certain number of filters is required to achieve the desired environment-friendly effect. In most countries, however, customers can make use of the ecologically sound recycling system for BRITA products. |
